Mark is delighted to contribute this work in Doreen Rao’s newly launched Global Encounters for Young Choirs with GIA Publications. The work was commissioned by the Cantiamo Choirs of Ottawa, Jackie Hawley, Director.  The text by award-winning Canadian poet Wendy MacLean is a poignant reflection of the response by Japanese children to the tragic events of the Fukushima atomic disaster and the Tsumami that followed.  It is a beautiful song of remembrance and hope for peace.  See score

Kingdom of the Saguenay
A musical retelling of traditional Québecois folk tales in two acts (one hour, 20 min.) The Winter Children
Set in Kingston, the true story of Irish orphans who are abandoned on Christmas Eve, 1847.  The community, including Presbyterian women and recently arrived nuns of the Religious Hospitallers of St. Joseph (Hotel Dieu), rally to provide food and shelter for the children. Script by Mary Alice Thompson and Mary Alice Downie.  Music, including folk song arrangements, carol arrangements plus original music by Mark Sirett.  Large cast of adult and children, chorus of teens and adults.  Produced by Cantabile Choirs, 1999.

The Holy Ground

The Holy Ground is a traditional nineteenth-century folksong from County Cork, Ireland and is based on a Welsh sea shanty, “The Lass of Swansea Town.” Written for, and dedicated to, Diane Loomer, founding director of the male chorus, Chor Leoni, this is a reflective arrangement of what is often a boistrous “tavern song,” capturing the sad sentiment of the lyrics.  See score & listen
